Pantone Color Of The Year And This Is What You Need To Know

The new year is here and to usher in 2021, Pantone has released its color (colors) of the year. Breaking the norms, this year we have two colors of the year. Each year, in December, Pantone releases a shade as the guiding color for the next year. For the selection process, Pantone combs through the zeitgeist keeping in mind every aspect of the society. Needless to say, the color of the year is of much significance to the trend forecasters and designers.

What started in 2000, soon became a trendsetter for branding, marketing, and the creative domain. Though of great significance, the idea of the ‘color of the year’ gained momentum after color forecasting came to the forefront in 2007. Pantone marked itself as the leader in everything color with their color of the year 2000 I.e., Cerulean 15-4020. After 5 years, for 2021 they have again forecasted two shades, Ultimate Gray and Illuminating, as the guiding colors of the season.

1. Ultimate Gray

color of the year

A perfect neutral, the Ultimate Gray is symbolic of the firm and dependable elements of our lives. In these testing times, we all have relied on something and someone. The neutral shade pays homage to the same factors.

2. Illuminating

color of the year

Poles apart from the neutral shade, Illuminating is emblematic of cheerful and vivacious elements. The color symbolizes the happy and vibrant aspects of our existence. This shade is sure to add an edge to an otherwise minimal design.

To quote Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of Pantone Color Institute, “Practical and rock-solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted, this is essential to the human spirit.” The forecasted colors present a melange of everything the world needs right now.

Here’s hoping this year’s forecast of hope and stability is more than just a forecast.
